You have the exact piece in your head, the right size, the right wood, the right proportions for your space, and you simply cannot find it in a shop. The dining table is always 200mm too long. The cabinet comes in the wrong finish. The bed doesn't quite fit the room.

This is where bespoke furniture comes in, and it is the heart of what we do at Whitman Innovations. From our factory in Blackheath, Cape Town, we design and handcraft custom solid wood furniture made to order, pieces built around your space, your taste, and the way you live.

What is bespoke furniture?

Bespoke simply means made to order, to your specification. Rather than choosing from whatever happens to be in stock, you start with what you actually want, and we build it from there.

That might mean adjusting one of our existing designs, perhaps a longer table, a different wood, or a custom finish. Or it might mean designing something entirely new with you from the ground up. Either way, the piece is made for you and only you, by hand, in our own factory.

Why choose custom over mass-produced?

Mass-produced furniture is made to a price, in large runs, often using veneered board and quick assembly. It serves a purpose, but it is built to be replaced.

Bespoke furniture is the opposite. When you commission a custom piece from us, you get:

• The exact dimensions you need, built to fit your room rather than forced to fit around a standard size.
• Solid wood, not board. We work in solid pine, ash and oak, chosen for beauty and built to last.
• A finish of your choosing, from natural oils to custom stains and washes.
• Craftsmanship you can see. Every piece is cut, joined, sanded and finished by hand by our team.
• Furniture that lasts generations. Made properly, a solid wood piece becomes an heirloom, not landfill.

It is, quite simply, the difference between buying furniture and owning something made for you.

Our bespoke process, step by step

We have made the custom process as straightforward as possible:

1. You get in touch. Tell us what you have in mind, whether it's a reference image, a rough sketch, dimensions, or just a description. Nothing needs to be polished; we will help shape it.
2. We discuss and refine. We talk through wood, finish, dimensions and detailing, and advise on what works best for the piece and your space.
3. We quote. You receive a clear, itemised quote with no surprises.
4. We build. On confirmation, your piece goes into production in our Blackheath factory, handcrafted by our team.
5. We deliver. We arrange careful delivery to your home, anywhere in South Africa.

How long does a custom piece take?

Because each bespoke piece is made by hand to order, custom commissions typically take 8 to 12 weeks from confirmation, depending on the design and complexity. Pieces from our standard collections are quicker, usually 4 to 6 weeks.

Good things take time, and a piece built to last generations is worth the wait.

If it is furniture, we can most likely build it. Over the years our team has handcrafted custom dining tables, beds, headboards, bedside tables, cabinets, sideboards, vanities and more. Recent custom commissions have included extendable dining tables, floating bedside pedestals, and beds designed entirely around a client's bedroom.
