Wood Species Guide
Every piece of Whitman furniture begins with a choice: which wood? It's the decision that shapes everything that follows — the colour, the texture, the weight, the feel of the piece decades from now. Here's what you need to know about the materials we work with.
PINE (OAK WASH FINISH)
Our most accessible wood species — and one of the most characterful. Pine is a softwood with a warm, open grain and natural knots that give each piece its own personality. Finished with our oak wash, it takes on a warm, golden tone that deepens beautifully over time.
Best for: Relaxed, organic interiors. Families with young children. Budget-conscious buyers who want the warmth of solid wood without the premium price.
Worth knowing: Pine is a softer wood — it will mark with use, but it also wears in gracefully and develops character over time.
ASH WOOD
Ash is a hardwood with a tight, straight grain and a naturally pale, creamy colour. It's strong, flexible and takes a finish beautifully — sitting tonally between the warmth of pine and the richness of oak. Our most versatile species.
Best for: Contemporary and transitional interiors. Spaces that need durability — dining tables that see daily use, bed frames, chairs. Buyers who want a premium material at a mid-range price.
Worth knowing: Ash has exceptional strength and impact resistance — which is why it's the traditional choice for fine furniture, tool handles and sports equipment alike.
SOLID OAK
Oak is the benchmark of quality solid wood furniture. Dense, durable and deeply grained, it carries a presence that's unmistakable. Our solid oak pieces are built to be handed down — this is furniture for life.
Best for: Formal dining rooms, master bedrooms, statement living spaces. Anyone investing in pieces that will only grow more beautiful with age.
Worth knowing: Solid oak is slow-grown and heavier than pine or ash — which is exactly why it commands the price it does. You feel the quality the moment you touch it.
OAK VENEER
Selected pieces feature oak veneer body panels combined with solid oak doors and structural components. This combination delivers the warmth and beauty of oak at a more accessible price point without compromising on quality or appearance. Oak veneer is used selectively where it enhances the design while maintaining structural integrity throughout.
MDF (PAINTED FINISHES)
Some pieces in our collection are available with an MDF base — finished in durable spray paint. MDF allows for crisp, clean painted finishes that solid wood cannot achieve as easily. It's a practical, cost-effective choice for pieces where a bold colour or matte painted finish is the priority over natural wood grain.
Best for: Statement painted pieces like the Ezra Bedside Table and Noa Bedside Table. Clients who want a specific colour finish.
Worth knowing: MDF is not a solid wood — it won't have the same grain character or longevity. We recommend solid wood wherever possible for structural pieces like tables, beds and chairs.
